California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking necessary steps in legislation to support immigrants and provide them with more rights in the United States. Undocumented immigrants in the state of California will now be able to obtain a State ID. Those who were not able to apply for a driver’s license are now able to apply for a government-issued ID, which was not possible prior to the passing of this legislation.
These IDs are so significant as they will open up a broad array of opportunities for immigrants in California. Individuals can access government benefits and health care with these IDs, which is a crucial step in the right direction towards helping immigrants. In addition to these rights, street vendors will be able to access local health permits much easier, immigrant students will have access to in-state tuition at public colleges, and low-income Californians will gain access to legal assistance. These state IDs will drastically change the lives of all of California’s immigrants that are residing there without legal status.
