DACA Action Encouraged by Democrats

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a policy that protects certain eligible immigrants who came to the United States as children from deportation by providing them with work permits. Before they lose their majority in the lower chamber of Congress next year, House Democrats are gearing up to display immigration reforms to the Senate. According to an announcement made by House Democrats during a closed-door meeting in the Capitol, the dreamers, who are the recipients of the DACA program, are the focus of the lame-duck campaign for a law. The decision was made only one week after the midterm elections, when both parties were battling for a greater number of Hispanic votes.

Following the 5th Circuit Court’s rejection of the DACA program, dreamers are being continuously threatened with losing their work permits and safeguards against deportation. If Congress does not take action during the lame-duck session, the courts might eliminate DACA as early as next year, and an average of 1,000 DACA participants will lose their employment each week in labor market segments that already have shortages, particularly in health care, education, and a number of other fields. As a direct consequence, Democratic leaders are deriving new regulations to save DACA.

The DACA plan is different from a House-passed bill that would give millions of farmworkers a path to citizenship. Democrats are devoted to creating more legislation that would guarantee permanent protections for these individuals. The DACA bill is currently in the works by Democrats are they are firmly committed to protecting the Dreamers and their livelihoods in this country.
