Form I-589 Updates and Delays

By August 3, 2022October 8th, 2022No Comments

Updated information on Form I-589 intake and processing delays has been posted. Form I-589 is an application for asylum and withholding of removal, which can also be used to apply for protection against the Convention Against Torture. There have been delays in issuing receipts for this form, but this should not affect your filing as long as the form was filed properly and in a timely manner. The application should be filed within one year of your last arrival in the United States. The filing date will still be the date that USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) received your properly filed Form I-589, not the date that it was processed. In turn, please confirm that you filed your form correctly and before this one-year deadline expires. If the form is not adequately filed, the application will be rejected, and your asylum process may be lengthened and delayed.
