Texas Governor Greg Abbott has sent dozens of migrants to Chicago. The buses of families are met by paramedics to examine the individuals and their medical needs before being brought to the Salvation Army Freedom Center, the first stop for arriving migrants. The Texas Governor has been sending migrants to New York and Washington D.C., and now Illinois, in order to lessen the number of asylum seekers settling at the U.S.-Mexican border. Many are disappointed with the state’s treatment of these migrants as they are being hauled around in buses and are sent to various areas of the country without their consent.
While Governor Abbott believes that he is improving the immigration situation at the border where many of these families are settling in border communities, Chicago Mayor Gary Grasso is displeased as he was given no advanced warning about the arrival of these migrants. However, several Democratic politicians are open and welcoming of these individuals and are working tirelessly to provide them with services to accommodate them. We are hopeful that the migrants will be able to find security and safety in Illinois and will find the ability to settle down in better conditions than those that they fled from.
